August in Sin City South

DSCF0774bAugust has always been one of the slower months for tourism in Cost Rica, at least as long as I’ve been around. But I have to say that the slowness this slow season is as slow as I’ve seen it. There’s no way to judge objectively, but just by the ‘feel’ of things, the old gray mare she ain’t what she used to be.

I was out just this Saturday evening with a friend, had some good Chinese food at a place called Coconut just south of Tin Jo on the other side of the street. We ambled up the street and ended up sitting in the lobby bar of the Del Rey to do some girl watching. The crowd, if you want to call it that, was sparse. This was at about 7 thirty on a Saturday night. We were two of about MAYBE ten guys in that area, but I think there were fewer. There were more girls working than potential customers but even then neither quality nor quantity was impressive.

I recognized one of the working girls I hadn’t seen in years. Her name is Katia and she is at least half Asian. We recognized each other and had a nice chat. Apparently she had been out of the biz for several years, married, but was back in the mix again. I know there are a lot of Asian fans, and Katia is fine, but she’s not what most Asiaphiles look for, that is, she’s not tiny. We chatted for a few minutes and as she leaned over to kiss my cheek goodbye she whispered $50 for all night. Times don’t appear to be so great.

A little while later two younger and smaller girls asked if they could sit down with us. We gave them no encouragement up to that point but since we had nothing special to do, we said okay and they sat down.

They ran through the stock questions… vacation? Where you stay? Etc. The one girl seemed quite young and was very slim and attractive, but there was a certain deadness to her eyes that I found a turn off. It’s hard to imagine anything but a mechanical performance from somebody who is reciting stock questions with a zombie-like expression. The other girl was less attractive, though not bad, but at least she appeared to be alive.

DSCF0849The zombie girl finally asked if we wanted company. We didn’t, and she wanted to know why. We assured her she looked great but we were just looking, not buying. Once she had reluctantly accepted this, she asked us to buy them a drink. We said sorry, but no. Why not? Sorry, no thanks. Then the zombie girl spotted my change lying on the table and asked for some money, outright. I had to chuckle at her directness. I once again told her no, sorry. I once again told her she looked great and wished her luck. They finally accepted that we were not going to be sending anything their ways, but both were good enough PR-wise to give us each a kiss on the cheek, rather than stalk away mad. I have to admit, when it comes to zombies, I prefer polite zombies to snotty ones.

I can’t say when or if things will pick up, but I suspect the Del Rey will weather this bit of slowness just fine. In my own experience I know of a couple of new recruits to the world’s oldest profession… girls that I knew outside the biz whose economic situation induced them to give hooking a try… nice enough girls, decent looking if not exactly hot. But the competition is growing and the ‘demand’ doesn’t seem to be. Only time will tell how it all turns out.

Dances Cover 260To change the subject, I’d like to thank everyone who has bought any of my eBooks. If you have, I’d like to ask a favor. If you wouldn’t mind, go to and write a little review? And if you know somebody who might be interested, I’d be grateful for any recommendations. Also, if you notice any typos or other issues, I’d appreciate it if you let me know. One reader pointed out a problem with some of the photos not making it to the Kindle edition, which I have since corrected and which he can download as a free replacement for the former edition.

I’m working on another book about one a working girl who has been in the biz for 3 decades plus. If you have any memories or thoughts that go back to the Park Hotel, I’d love to hear them. I have included a couple of small samples under ‘working girl tales’ and will do a few more before coming out with the book itself. In any case, thanks for reading the blog and double thanks to those who have bought any of the books. Hasta luego!
