Who is Against “The Profession,” and Why?

Those of us who enjoy the services of working girls, and may even write about it (who, me?) will encounter those who oppose the whole idea. They dislike the fact that there are women working in ‘the profession’ and that there are men who employ them.

There are a number of common accusations that ‘the opposition’ likes to make. First, there is the pedophile bit. Obviously, these guys (and women, occasionally) exist. But the connection between those who pay for pleasure and those who abuse children is just one of those things that some people just ‘know’ has to be true, without needing any further evidence. Statistics are essentially nonexistent, but I would wager that the incidence of paid sex with minors is probably no different than the incidence among those who do not pay.

Unlike many of the moralists who have never even met a working girl before, I know many and have had many, many long conversations with them. Virtually all did indeed have sex before they were ‘of legal age.’ And not a single one was ‘deflowered’ by a gringo tourist. Often it was incest or if not, it was some other local, sometimes also under age, and sometimes older, sometimes a LOT older. But for those who JUST KNOW who is to blame, facts don’t matter.

There are downsides to consorting with pros, to be sure. STDs are one hazard. STDs are a hazard for anyone who is not celibate. Being monogamous isn’t even a sure thing, since your partner may not be so monogamous and pass something along to YOU. The only STD I ever caught wasn’t from a professional, but from a ‘casual’ encounter with a ‘regular’ girl. In the past decade I have had zero problems. ‘Safe sex’ using protection really IS quite safe. Yeah, a condom can break but it doesn’t happen that often. Your chances of getting run over by a bus or taxi (in San Jose) are probably significantly higher than getting AIDS when a condom breaks. If you’ve walked around much in town, you know what I mean.

Most of the anti-prostitution blather I hear comes from two sources. One group are the religious/moralistic types that want to wipe out sin (in others, mostly). They usually tell themselves that they are doing US a favor by deciding what’s right and wrong for us. I remain totally unconvinced that they care about US. I am more inclined to believe their motivation has to do with THEM than me or you. Some, perhaps, believe that their God will punish THEM if they don’t fight against perceived ‘immorality.’ Others may be opposed because they want to get the temptation out of sight… temptation for them or perhaps their husbands (for the females). For those who repress their sexuality, anything that hints of S-E-X is a threat. This goes for all moral crusaders, whether their ‘cause’ is anti-pornography, anti-gay, anti-prostitution or whatever. Remember Larry Craig? Remember Jimmy Swaggart? Remember Ted Haggard? Remember Jim Bakker? No? Well click here if you’d like a long list of Evangelical anti-sex crusaders who got involved in sex scandals, gay or otherwise.

Another major opposition group comprises nearly half of the population, i.e., women. Of course I exclude those who are actually employed in ‘the profession.’ But I can see their point, although they seldom put it as bluntly as I will here: Commercial sex lowers the value of non-commercial sex. To put it another way, women have a considerable amount of clout as the gatekeepers of heterosexual sex. We males are very often enslaved by our sex drive. Although it was truer in the past than today, many men get married or otherwise involved in ‘committed’ relationships because their sex drive is telling them they NEED to DO SOMETHING to scratch their itch. Marriage has traditionally been the socially acceptable way to do that.

Perhaps you have heard the old saying “why buy the cow when you get the milk for free?” That saying has somewhat lost its original meaning. Currently I have heard it used by men as an argument against marriage. But originally, it was a FEMALE saying directed at fellow females: “Don’t give sex away, girls, or he won’t MARRY you!”

I will freely admit that there is a lot of baggage that comes along with ‘the profession’ as it is now. In Costa Rica, the workers are most often (not always) from the poorer classes. Until I came to Costa Rica I had never met anyone who had never gone to school. Now I have. I had never met so many people with a sixth grade education or less. The literacy rate is pretty high here, but it’s not because the average level of education is great, it is simply that Spanish is a phonetic language and if you speak it, you can learn to read and write rather easily. I know two working girls who taught themselves and neither is what I’d call a genius.

It’s true that those women in ‘the trade’ tend to have problems with drugs, alcohol, crime and violence. But the same could be said for a sizeable percentage of the poor in the United States, male or female. As the saying goes, when you sleep with dogs you get fleas.

DSC01015Bottom line, I don’t feel guilty for paying a woman for her company. I am not to blame for the poverty in this country that leaves so many with no decent alternatives. There are a LOT of women and children who have a roof over their head and some food on the table because there are customers for the only thing they possess that is marketable. If the moral crusaders want to fix the situation, maybe they will sell their vacation house or second car and donate to a charity that “saves” women from poverty.

Until I see that, I firmly believe the working girls appreciate US more than they appreciate the anti-prostitution crusaders.
