Girl Watching in San Jose

People sometimes ask me what I do all day. There are numerous options for me but one thing that any red-blooded man can enjoy is picking out a nice comfy spot and watching the girls walk by.

I have often said that the prettiest women in San Jose are NOT the girls working the Del Rey. I live downtown and since I don’t have a car I walk when I need to go somewhere. I am always pleasantly amazed how just when I think I have seen the most beautiful woman in Costa Rica, I see another that is even prettier. The best things in life ARE free (sometimes).

I shot these videos based primarily on where I could get a decent angle and not point my camera in somebody’s face. Strangely, some people just don’t appreciate that. I found a few spots where I could shoot some video and not stick out like a swollen sore thumb, and the video is the result.

If the girls in the video don’t look like supermodel material to you, I admit that these are just the women I was able to get on video. As I walk around I often come upon a truly stunning woman but my look at her was perhaps just a fraction of a second and definitely not long enough to drag out my video camera and shoot. Not to mention that doing that might get me punched in the mouth.

I should add by way of disclaimer that there are plenty of homely women in this country. But to compare it to the girls of Walmart, for example, you’ll see a lot more lovelies on the streets of San Jose than in the Pringle’s aisle.

There are a number of pretty decent places to sit and watch the parade. One of my favorites is in the Plaza de la Cultura, which is the square just north of Teatro Nacional (National Theater) on Avenida Central, between Calles 3 and 1 (I think). Anyplace along Avenida Central is good if you can find a good vantage point. Upstairs at the Mariscar is good as is the spot across the street in the little food court in the mall (just down the hill and right from the Del Rey). You can also sit in the News Cafe of the Presidente Hotel (if you aren’t protesting their new ‘no chica’ policy) or the restaurant of the Balmoral. If your budget is more like mine you can take a seat at the McDonald’s (after they get it rebuilt) or just find a public bench, or a building you can lean on.

It’s one of the few things a chica lover can do that won’t cost any money at all. So get OUT of that bar and hit the streets. If you see me… just nod.

That video of downtown San Jose reminds me of when I lived there. Wow! And, how 'bout that music? Who's the musician? – I gotta get that tune!

Ah, the music! That is the famous Carmen Miranda, the song is 'Tico Tico,' If that name doesn't ring a bell, you may recall the Bugs Bunny cartoon where he cross-dressed and had a hat with a bowl of fruit on it. Bugs was imitating Carmen Miranda.
