NOTE: Semana Santa (the week of Good Friday and Easter) is generally considered the worst week to visit Costa Rica. It is the busiest ‘vacation’ week for locals and hotels near the beaches or other resorts are often booked solid. San Jose is a ghost town. Alcohol is not for sale starting at midnight Wednesday through midnight on Friday. Locals who drink usually stock up before Wednesday. Some bars in the beach towns will ignore the restrictions. Enforcement in San Jose is pretty universal. Most businesses and all government offices are shut tight. Unless you want to watch religious processions, it’s a good week to avoid.
Unless you want to film a remake of ‘I Am Legend’ or ‘The Omega Man,’ in which case it’s perfect.
