Rich and Famous in Costa Rica

What do the Dalai Lama and Britney Spears have in common? Both Pisces? Scratch golfers? Well, we can’t comment on the Pisces or golf bit, but one thing we can say for sure is that they have both made trips to Costa Rica. These are just two of the many celebrities who visit and even live in Costa Rica.

Probably most famous celebrity landowner would have to be Mel Gibson, who owns a house in Guanacaste in the northwest part of the country. Mel (if I may call him by his first name) met with Costa Rican President Oscar Arias Sanchez to discuss business and philanthropic ventures. Mel is also responsible for bringing down his Hollywood neighbor, Britney Spears.

Another frequent and enthusiastic visitor is actor Danny De Vito.

Despite a hair-raising encounter with a scorpion (read it here: the star of ‘Twins’ and ‘Taxi’ still loves to visit.

The Four Seasons resort in Papagayo has had more than its share of big names. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt spent Christmas Day, 2006 here with Colombian refugees, and also celebrated New Years there. Within its first month of operation Michael Jordan and Madonna were other notable guests. (website is: ) As of this writing, room rates run from a low of $198 per night up to over $9,000 for a private villa. I’ll take the private villa, and can you get somebody to help me fill out my bankruptcy papers?

Derek Jeter and Billy Crystal were in Costa Rica when they hatched their plan to let Billy Crystal participate in Yankee’s spring training. Crystal said “We were sitting on the beach in Costa Rica and Derek asked how I was feeling, I kind of told him ‘Ehhh, so-so,’ in a somewhat joking fashion. And he asked what would make me feel better. I responded to him in another joking way that it would be great if the Yankees could sign me to a one-day contract and I could be a part of the Yankees for a day. One thing led to another and he said, ‘Let’s make this happen.'”

There have been numerous other celebrity spottings, from sports stars to porn stars. You never know who you might run into. Maybe you only want to know what it feels like to be rich and famous. For $9000 a night, you can find out.
